Since the 13th century, the Shahs of Persia have resided every summer in the Lâr valley, near Mount Damâvand, in central Alborz. The Iranian kings and their court received foreign ambassadors there and ruled their kingdom from this high valley, under the tents of this yeylâq. This tradition was maintained under the Qajars and the Pahlavi, until the revolution of 1979. Totaling the months spent in this summer residence, the Lar valley has been de facto the "capital of Iran" for more than long as Isfahan or Tehran.
