Early medieval ceramics in French Coastal Flanders : identity cards of French productions and importations

A synthetic work has been undertaken on Early medieval ceramics of the North of France. This study is particularly focus on the Coastal Flanders of the French part. This is a very particular middle in really interaction with sea universe and possibly “opens” over the world. The systematical observation of clay of ceramics allow establishing real identity cards of French productions of this period and consequently, distinguishing clearly importations. The German or Dutch ceramics that are imported, for example, can be discuss here. At the same time, some local objects seem to copy this productions, it is the case for the red-painted. This paper proposes to consider the evolution of the local and imported ceramics from 8th to 12th century in this particular territory, focus on clay and fabrics observations.
