Houses and dwellings at the end of the Middle Ages in Normandy
La maison et l’habitat à la fin du Moyen Âge en Normandie

For a generation, Norman archaeology has unearthed a corpus of sites that allows us today to broadly outline the regional forms of rural housing in the late Middle Ages. However, many shortcomings remain, relating as much to the layout or arrangement of the houses as to their inhabitants and to the life that they lead there, to their environment, to the plots, outbuildings, road network, to the free or cultivated areas... Incidental to the soil deficit and occupancy levels, to the levelling of the walls or to the narrowness of the excavation areas, these gaps that are inherent in archaeology can nevertheless be questioned in the light of the written sources of which the input remains largely unexploited to date by archaeologists, historians being more concerned with lexical, land, legal or socio-economic issues. Some specific examples borrowed from the Lower Normandy sector of the Dives valley, in the Calvados, show how the use of texts can prove profitable for archaeologists.
Depuis une génération, l’archéologie normande a exhumé un corpus de sites qui permet aujourd’hui de cerner, dans leurs grandes lignes, les formes régionales de l’habitat rural au bas Moyen Âge. Cependant, de nombreuses lacunes subsistent, relatives aussi bien au plan ou à l’agencement des maisons qu’à leurs habitants et à la vie qu’ils y mènent, à leur environnement, parcellaire, dépendances, voirie, aux espaces libres ou cultivés... Liées au déficit des sols et niveaux d’occupation, à l’arasement des murs ou encore à l’étroitesse des aires de fouille, ces lacunes inhérentes à l’archéologie peuvent néanmoins être interrogées à la lumière des sources écrites dont l’apport reste largement sous-exploité à ce jour par les archéologues, les historiens étant davantage concernés par des problématiques lexicales, foncières, juridiques ou socio-économiques. Quelques exemples précis empruntés au secteur bas-normand de la vallée de la Dives, dans le département du Calvados, montrent comment le recours aux textes peut s’avérer fructueux pour l’archéologue.
